I-35 Highway Named Second Deadliest Road in Texas

Posted on November 10, 2025 in Car Accidents

New Braunfels, TX personal injury attorneyThe Texas Department of Public Safety has named I-35 as the second most dangerous roadway in Texas for fatal car and truck accidents. A combination of distracted driving, tailgating, heavy traffic, and out-of-state drivers combined to cause almost 650 deaths between 2018 and 2022 alone.

In particular, the section of I-35 that merges with I-14 (about an hour and a half north of New Braunfels) has been named especially dangerous for its bottlenecks in rush hour traffic. Only I-10 has had more fatalities than I-35, and only by about 25 more people. This issue is so serious TxDOT has initiated a safety campaign specifically targeting drivers on I-35.

Wherever they happen, fatal car and truck accidents break hearts and change lives forever. Families have a lifetime of moments with their loved ones robbed from them in these tragic situations. If you have lost a spouse, parent, or child to an I-35 car accident, contact our New Braunfels personal injury attorney to find out what your options are.

What Causes Fatal Accidents on I-35 in Texas?

Interstate 35 is one of the busiest highways in the United States, stretching from the Mexican border through major Texas cities like Laredo, San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas. Heavy commercial truck traffic, constant construction zones, and high-speed congestion make it one of the most dangerous roads in the state.

Fatal crashes on I-35 happen because of speeding, distracted driving, fatigue, impaired driving, or unsafe lane changes in heavy traffic. The mix of passenger vehicles and large commercial trucks further increases the risk of deadly collisions.

What Kills People in Fatal Car and Truck Accidents?

Even with modern vehicle safety features, many victims do not survive car accidents when they suffer severe injuries. The most common factors that lead to fatal injuries in car and truck crashes include:

  • Blunt-force trauma from impact with other vehicles or fixed objects

  • Internal bleeding or organ damage caused by the crash’s force

  • Traumatic brain or spinal cord injuries that lead to paralysis or death

  • Underride collisions, when a smaller car slides beneath a truck trailer

  • Ejection from the vehicle when seat belts are not worn or fail during impact

  • Post-crash fires or explosions that trap victims inside their vehicles

Understanding how and why these crashes happen is critical to preventing future tragedies and holding negligent drivers accountable under Texas law.
